A darling copy of Goldsmith's classic tale, published in this particularly attractive "Cranford" edition by Macmillan in 1892. The Vicar of Wakefield, originally published in 1766, follows the titular character, known as Dr. Primrose, who seems to experience all the trials Georgian society could possibly prepare him for. It is a sentimental portrait of English village life, brimming with a charisma and charm which made it one of the most popular books of the 18th and 19th Centuries. This edition is part of Macmillan's highly successful "Cranford" series of illustrated classics, featuring fabulous line art by the master illustrator Hugh Thomson. The book is generously illustrated with a cover also designed by the artist. In good plus condition with a little wear to the corners, a slightly dimmed spine, and light foxing throughout. Generally square with bright gilt to the front and edges. Fully bound in the iconic series binding style with olivine boards and intricate gilt-stamped botanicals and titles to the front board and spine. 305pg plus rear catalogue. 18 x 12 cm. My books are packed and posted using recycled materials wherever possible. #152
