Water is trapped in Herkimer Diamonds as a fluid inclusion that was sealed off during the crystal's formation, which occurred about 300 million years ago. This fluid, often containing saltwater or petroleum, was part of the pocket where the crystal grew. As the crystal continued to grow around it, the cavity became enclosed, trapping the liquid and creating a dynamic "bubble" within the now-formed quartz.
