as part of the 50 State Quarters program. It was released in 1999 and
features an image of a great blue heron in flight above a tidal salt
marsh, with the inscriptions "Delaware," "The First State," "Bombay
Hook."
The design celebrates the natural beauty
and wildlife of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, located in
Delaware and home to over 250 bird species, as well as many other
animals and plants. The great blue heron is a common sight at the refuge
and symbolizes the importance of preserving the wetlands and wildlife
habitats found there. The coin honors the role of Bombay Hook National
Wildlife Refuge in conservation efforts and wildlife education.
