Featured in this lot are four pieces of gorgeous Nemadji Pottery, also known as Minnesota Swirl pottery circa 1930-50s. Nemadji pottery originates in Minnesota's Arrowhead region. Many people now consider it to be "Indian pottery," even though it has nothing to do with the Ojibway tribe. Clay that was excavated from the Nemadji River's banks was initially used to make it. In Moose Lake, Nemadji Pottery was founded in 1923. It produced decorative items meant mainly for the tourist trade, as well as floor tiles for widespread distribution, mostly in the west and northeast. The painted decoration had a unique look, and the design is still in use today. A note in one of the pots reads, "Twenty-five thousand years ago the ice sheet of the glacial age covered the land. It is now known that the primitive ancestors of our present Indians lived here when the great ice sheet started to melt and retreat.
