The colors in the tartan hold symbolic meanings for Nova Scotia:
Blue: Represents the sea surrounding the province.
Green: The dark and light greens represent the province's evergreen and deciduous trees.
White: Symbolizes the granite rocks and the surf of the coastline.
Gold: Represents Nova Scotia's Royal Charter.
Red: Comes from the lion rampant on the provincial crest.
This is the official tartan of Nova Scotia. It was designed in 1953 by Bessie Murray, the president of the Halifax Weavers' Guild. The design was so popular after being displayed at a breeders' convention that it was officially adopted as the provincial tartan in 1963, making it the first provincial tartan in Canada.
