Soul Media, formed in 1969, aimed to fuse jazz and rock. Their direction took the next step with this album, "In the Groove," recorded in 1973.
They brought the sharpness of jazz to the forefront, melting in rock to create an edge, injecting funk to exude power and elasticity. They created intensely "cool music" that couldn't be categorized by existing genres like jazz-rock, jazz-funk, or fusion, music that was both strong and sophisticated.
This work is also considered a response to The Crusaders, which Jiro Inagaki was paying attention to at the time. The aim was a success. Soul Media gained a "sophisticated black feeling" with this work, and headed towards their final destination, "Funky Stuff."
