This vintage wooden pocket shrine, also known as a travel triptych or "bullet" shrine exemplifies the mid-20th-century woodcarving traditions of the Val Gardena region in Italy. Produced circa 1950s, the piece features a turned fruitwood case with a domed capsule profile designed for portability. The hinged casing opens 180 degrees to reveal a central devotional figure of the Madonna and Child.
The interior houses a hand-carved and painted figure depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child. The infant Jesus holds a blue sphere, symbolizing the Orb or Globus of the Savior of the World. The figure is set against a recessed background detailed with a "frosted" or limed white finish. The exterior is smooth turned wood with a flat base, secured by small brass hinges.
