1970s A Walking Tour Guide to Historic New Haven Tourist Booklet & Map TG2

Starting as a pasture and burial ground, the Green then became the site of the first Statehouse in 1763, although cows could still graze there until 1821. At the end of the 1700's, Sen. James Hillhouse promoted the planting of elms on the Green and around town, in time earning New Haven the title of Elm City. The Green with its three churches appears nowessentially as it did in 1815, and in consequence is designated a National Historic Landmark, administered by a small committee composed of certain descendants of the original settlers.
1. CITY HALL, on Church Street facing the Green, is one of the country's earliest and finest designs in the High Victorian style. It is a work of Henry Austin, and contains an elaborate iron staircase.
The polychrome facade in various sandstone and limestone shades was restored in 1976.
