The uniform for the 2016 Shamrock Series was custom-designed to honor those who served in World War I, inspired by the memorial on the east door of the
Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the
Notre Dame campus. The jersey features a military green color scheme with matte gold accents on the shoulders and a "God, Country, Notre Dame" inscription above the numbers. A famous phrase carved into the stone lintel above the east entrance of the Basilica. The primary design elements mimic the hand-illustrated image and the Gothic font style also found on the Basilica doorway and on newspaper mastheads from the 1920s.
