This is a rare and beautiful piece of midcentury German art pottery.
Lava pottery or sometime called "fat" lava pottery is the name given to certain styles of postwar West German art pottery from the 1960's &1970's. The genre gets its name from the thick glazes that typify many of these pieces, some of which look as if their surfaces are composed of frozen flows of lava in radioactive hues ranging from fiery reds to oranges to cobalt blues.
In 1927, Alois Scheurich jointly established a company named “Scheurich and Greulich” (S&G).
The Scheurich company became one of the largest manufacturers of ceramics in Germany in 1950s -1980s. They exported more than any other ceramic company in Germany and offered the widest range of shapes and glazes. West German art pottery is famous for its great variety & wild color.
