The Rohloff chain tensioner enables the use of Rohloff's Speedhub on full-suspension bikes, maintaining the chain at an appropriate length to allow the rear triangle to move through its full shock travel. For hardtails and systems with a swing arm connecting the rear axle to the main frame, lacking adjustable dropouts, long slotted horizontal dropouts, or eccentric bottom brackets, a chain tensioner is also required.
