This is a antique metal chocolate mold, used for making hollow or solid chocolate rabbits for Easter. Molds like this were popular in the early 1900s and were typically made of tin-plated steel or aluminum. They were used by confectioners and chocolatiers to create detailed chocolate figures. The two halves of the mold would be held together with hinges or clips while the chocolate was setting.
As plastics technology advanced in the 20th century, these metal molds were largely replaced by plastic alternatives. This mold is called a "Standing Rabbit" mold by Eppelsheimer, a New York manufacturer. It’s one of my collection of vintage rabbits. It’s old and has age related issues but is an original antique.
