This is an acquired piece and I do not have the exact history on it. It is wooden and hand carved. There are no markings on it.

Based on research The Ashanti Akua' ba Fertility Ritual doll is best associated with the Fante people of Africa. The akua' ba statues traditionally have large, disc shaped heads and small bodies.

Often these fertility statues are made of bronze or wood. Akua' ba is a female figure symbolizing fertility. When a women from the Ashanti people wishes to become pregnant, or is pregnant, she may carry the akua'ba statue for several weeks or months. If the child is born a girl, the mother often gives her this doll for her to play with and to learn the intricacies of motherhood. The akua'ba is often given to the woman by a priest.
