An antique Norwegian 830 silver Solje Wedding Brooch. The brooch is 2 1/2" across featuring 6 5/8" larger "spoons" and 18 smaller "spoons" in groups of three. Handmade hinge and C-clasp. Marked 830 AD. 830 denotes 83 percent silver content which is standard for Scandinavian jewelry. In fine antique condition.
Solje is a traditional form of Norwegian/Scandinavian silver jewelry and was thought to have protective powers. Solje was given primarily to girls and women at important milestones in their lives such as weddings and childbirth.
